Give your home more personality...

THIS ONE...

- had their tail crack in the kiln during their second firing [see photograph in gallery]. The ceramic seems to be robust still, as the clear glaze acts like a kind of glassy glue and the bulk of the tail has integrity. This pinniped is discounted because of this flaw. Take him as you find him.

- is a full-body pinniped, made to stand to attention on your wall, or to lie anywhere you think is safe. All you need is a single tack and they can hang proudly. Bedside tables are also popular; desks are good. Ceramics are cool and weighty, so hold this one when you need to

- is made of beautiful porcelain which has been painted by hand with underglaze and fired with a clear glaze. The underglaze is mixed from white slip and black stain so that I can get the shades I want and painted using different techniques to give them their distinctive "coat"

- 150mm long and around 50mm in diameter

SOME THOUGHTS

Bring them home and name them. Anything you like. Because they were inspired by stories from countries close to the Arctic Circle - diverse cultures and ethnicities which all have stories about "seal people" - one from there will be perfect. Think: Celtic, Scandinavian, Icelandic, Inuit...

Although simple in construction, with a method that's consistent and with a few key features, each of these pinnipeds is unique. I can try to make one that has a particular attitude but these figures really "reveal themselves". I start with forming the body and that tends to reveal a certain kind of attitude. Then I add their muzzle and eyes, then the paws, each addition giving more detail to their character.

They are uncomplicated in form and rich in personality. They're here to bring you comfort and joy. Bring one home to keep you or a loved one company.
